# Buying Used Ram Parts in Ontario: What to Ask a Yard > What to ask before buying a used Ram part in Ontario: how it was tested, whether HST applies, pickup or shipping, cores, and what O. Reg. 85/16 and must depollute vehicles (fuel, oil, coolant, refrigerant, batteries, mercury switches) before crushing and keep records. A yard that can answer all five questions plainly is the one to buy from. By Dodge Daddy, Hamilton Region, Ontario ยท Updated 10 Sep 2026 ## How was it tested? The honest answer names a method. "Compression tested in the truck, all eight within a range, listened to running" is an answer. "Runs good" is not. For a transmission, "driven through the gears on the donor" is an answer. For electrical parts, "checked working on the donor" is the answer. Ask also for the donor's mileage on engines, transmissions and differentials, and for the reason the truck was dismantled: a rear-end collision leaves a front end worth buying, and the other way round. ## Which truck did it come off? Year, trim, and, for a Ram 1500, which body: the 2009 to 2018 DS, the 2019 to 2024 Classic that kept the DS body, or the 2019 to 2026 DT. Because two different trucks were sold as the Ram 1500 from 2019 to 2024, a listing that says "2021 Ram 1500" has told you half of what you need. Ask for the donor's VIN or a photo of its door-jamb label if you want to be sure; the [identification guide](https://dodgedaddy.ca/guides/how-to-tell-4th-gen-from-5th-gen-ram-1500/) shows the tells. ## Will I pay HST on a used part? It depends on the seller. A business must register for GST/HST once its taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters; below that it is a "small supplier" and may register voluntarily. Canada Revenue Agency's rule is that once the $30,000 threshold is exceeded in a single quarter the business must "register for the GST/HST" and "start charging GST/HST on the supply that made you exceed $30,000". A registered seller charges 13 percent HST in Ontario and should show its registration number on the invoice; a small supplier does not charge it. Ask which applies, and get an invoice either way. Checked 9 September 2026. ## What is a core, and will I owe one? A core is your old part, returned to the seller so it can be rebuilt or recycled. Remanufactured parts almost always carry a core charge refunded on return. Used parts pulled from a donor usually do not, but some yards want the old unit back on engines, transmissions and steering components. Ask before you buy, because a core charge changes the real price. Dodge Daddy states any core expectation in the quote. ## Pickup or shipping? Heavy and large parts (engines, transmissions, beds, doors, hoods, bumpers) are pickup in practice, because freight on them costs a meaningful fraction of the part and a panel that arrives creased has lost its value. Lamps, mirrors, radios, clusters, switches, wheels and suspension pieces ship well. Ask what the shipping quote includes (packing, insurance) and who carries the risk in transit. Ontario regulates end-of-life vehicle (ELV) waste disposal sites under Ontario Regulation 85/16, made under the Environmental Protection Act, with registration through the Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR). The province's user guide defines an ELV as "a motor vehicle or motor vehicle hulk that has been abandoned, or is being managed for the purposes of recycling it, reusing it for a purpose other than an operable motor vehicle, or disposal". Before a vehicle is sheared, crushed or shredded the operator must remove "batteries", "battery cable connectors that contain lead", "electrical switches that contain mercury", "fluids", "tires", "tire weights that contain lead" and "asbestos waste", with refrigerants handled under O. Reg. 463/10. Fluid removal must occur "on an impermeable surface that has a spill containment system, and under a covered structure", removed materials may not "be stored for a period exceeding 24 months", and operators must keep records for two years including vehicle identification numbers. Small operations are exempt from registration when a site receives "not more than 2 ELVs in a year and no more than 10 ELVs at any one time" with only part removal and collection. What that means for a buyer is that a yard handling volume is supposed to be registered, to drain trucks properly before they are crushed and to know which VINs it has handled. Asking a yard whether it is EASR-registered is a fair question, and the answer tells you something about how the place is run.
