# How to Read a Ram 1500 VIN: Model Year, Engine & Plant Codes

**A Ram 1500's 17-character VIN tells you the model year (the 10th character), the engine (the 8th character on FCA vehicles), the assembly plant (the 11th) and, decoded, the exact model and body.** The fastest reliable method is NHTSA's free vPIC decoder, which returns make, model, model year, plant and engine from the manufacturer's own filings. For a used-parts buyer the VIN settles the two questions that decide fit: which of the three Ram 1500 bodies you have and which engine and transmission it left the factory with. Send it with every inquiry; it saves a wasted trip.

## Where is the VIN?

On a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, readable from outside; on the label in the driver's door jamb; on the ownership (registration) card; and on the insurance slip. Any of them will do. A photo of the door jamb label is the most useful thing you can send us, because it also carries the paint code and the build date.

## What does each position mean?

**The 17 VIN positions, as used on a Ram 1500**

| 9 | Check digit | Calculated from the other 16; a decoder validates it |
| 10 | Model year | 9 = 2009, A = 2010, B = 2011, C = 2012, D = 2013, E = 2014, F = 2015, G = 2016, H = 2017, J = 2018, K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026 |

VIN structure per the US standard NHTSA's decoder is built on, 49 CFR Part 565; NHTSA states its decoder identifies "make and model, model year, plant of manufacture and country, engine information" from manufacturer filings. ## How do I decode it for free?

Type the 17 characters into NHTSA's vPIC decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder. It returns the make, model, model year, plant, engine displacement and cylinders, and often the body class and trim, from what the manufacturer filed with NHTSA. It works for Canadian-market trucks because Ram files the same VIN structure for both countries. ## Why does the engine code matter for a parts order?

Because a truck can have been re-engined, and because the same year and trim was sold with more than one engine. The 8th character is the engine as built. If your truck says 5.7 on the fender and the VIN says 3.6, somebody changed something, and the parts that fit follow the VIN's truck plus whatever was changed, which is a conversation worth having before you buy a transmission.

## Does the VIN tell me DS, Classic or DT?

Yes, once decoded. For a 2019 to 2024 truck, the model year alone leaves both bodies possible. The decoder's model name and, in particular, the plant settle it: Ram 1500 Classics were built at Warren, the new DT at Sterling Heights. Ram's own attribute codes in positions 4 to 8 also differ between the two, though they are not something a buyer needs to memorise when a decoder is free. ## What else is on the door jamb label?

The paint code (three characters beginning with P, needed for any body panel), the build month and year, the gross vehicle weight rating, the tire sizes and pressures, and often the interior trim code. A photo of that label answers most of the questions we would otherwise have to ask.
