**A 2009 to 2012 Ram 1500 V8 has a Chrysler six-speed (545RFE, then 65RFE). From 2013 the DS offered the ZF-designed TorqueFlite eight-speed: standard on the 3.6 Pentastar (8HP45) and available, then standard, on the 5.7 HEMI (8HP70), with the 65RFE still fitted to some V8 trucks in 2013. Every 2019 and later DT has an eight-speed: the 850RE behind the V6 and the 8HP75 behind the HEMI.** Count the gears on the dash or dial, then read the tag on the case to be sure, because a used transmission has to match engine, year, body and 2WD or 4x4.

## What does Stellantis say about which truck got which?

The 2013 press kit says the eight-speed TorqueFlite 8 was "standard equipment with 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine" and "available with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8", replacing what had been a four-speed on the V6. For the 2019 DT, the launch release names the "TorqueFlite 850RE transmission" for the 3.6 eTorque and the "TorqueFlite 8HP75 transmission" for the 5.7 HEMI. Stellantis's releases use the TorqueFlite name; the 8HP codes are ZF's designations and appear on the transmission's own tag and in the parts trade.

The Stellantis quotes above establish the 2013 and 2019 points. The intermediate years are shop-floor knowledge from the trucks we dismantle and the tags on their cases; confirm against your own truck's tag before ordering.

## How do I read the tag?

On the eight-speeds the identification label is on the side of the case, a bar-code sticker with the transmission type and a part number. On the RFE six-speeds it is a stamped tag on the case. The window sticker and the sales-code label in the glovebox also name the transmission by sales code (DFD and DFT are the codes seen for the eight-speeds on DS window stickers; DG7 for the 65RFE). If you cannot get under the truck, a photo of the glovebox label with your inquiry does the job.

## Can I put an eight-speed in a six-speed truck?

Not as a simple swap. The eight-speed uses a rotary dial shifter in the dash rather than a column lever, a different controller and wiring, a different driveshaft length and a different transfer case adapter on 4x4s, and the truck's computers have to be told. People do it; it is a project, not a Saturday. If your six-speed has failed, a good used 65RFE is the sensible repair, and we stock them.

## Does an 8HP70 fit where an 8HP75 was, or the reverse?

No. The 8HP75 in the DT has a different case, bellhousing and controller calibration, and the eTorque trucks add the hybrid integration. Match body to body: DS and Classic HEMIs take the 8HP70, DT HEMIs take the 8HP75.

## What about 2WD versus 4x4?

The output end of the transmission is different: a 4x4 unit bolts to a transfer case, a 2WD unit has a tailhousing and output yoke. Say which you have with every inquiry.
