Ram 1500 bed lengths and cab styles: 5'7", 6'4", 8', Quad and Crew
Ram 1500 boxes come in three lengths, 5 feet 7 inches, 6 feet 4 inches and 8 feet, and three cab styles, Regular, Quad and Crew. Stellantis's Canadian fact sheet for the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic pairs them exactly: Regular Cab with the 8-foot or 6-foot-4 bed, Quad Cab with the 6-foot-4 bed, and Crew Cab with the 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 bed. The fifth-generation DT dropped the Regular Cab and the 8-foot box. To measure yours, run a tape along the floor from the front panel to the inside of the closed tailgate: about 67 inches is the short box, about 76 the 6-foot-4, about 98 the 8-foot.
Which cab took which bed?
| Cab | DS and Classic (2009 to 2024) | DT (2019 to 2026) | Rear doors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab | 8-foot or 6-foot-4 bed | Not offered | None |
| Quad Cab | 6-foot-4 bed | 6-foot-4 bed | Shorter rear doors, less rear legroom |
| Crew Cab | 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 bed | 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 bed | Full-size rear doors |
How long is each box, really?
The names are nominal. Measured inside along the floor, the 5-foot-7 box is about 67 inches, the 6-foot-4 box about 76 inches and the 8-foot box about 98 inches. Measure with the tailgate closed, from the inside face of the front bulkhead to the inside face of the gate. If you get a number near 67 you have a short box; near 76, the standard box; near 98, the long box. A RamBox bed measures the same length but is narrower between the sides because of the storage bins.
What is the difference between a Quad Cab and a Crew Cab?
Length. Both have four doors, but the Quad Cab is the shorter cab: its rear doors are shorter and its rear seat has less legroom, which is why it only came with the 6-foot-4 box, keeping the overall truck a manageable length. The Crew Cab is longer, with full-size rear doors, and came with either box. For parts this means a Quad Cab rear door does not fit a Crew Cab, and the rear seats differ too. Front doors are shared across all three cabs within a body.
What are the wheelbases?
For the DT, Stellantis lists a "144.5-inch wheelbase on Crew Cab short beds and a 153.5-inch wheelbase on Crew Cab long beds – both four inches longer" than the previous truck, which puts the DS Crew Cab short box at 140.5 inches and long box at 149.5 inches. Wheelbase decides the length of the rear driveshaft, the brake lines and the fuel lines, so when you order a driveshaft we ask for cab and box, not just the year.

Only with the frame to match. A 5-foot-7 Crew Cab frame is shorter than a 6-foot-4 Crew Cab frame; the box, the driveshaft, the lines and the bumper position all follow the frame. Swapping a box for the same length is a bolt-on; swapping length is a different truck. What people do swap is a plain box for a RamBox one, or the reverse, which within a body and length is straightforward apart from the RamBox wiring.
How do I say all this in a parts inquiry?
"2017 Crew Cab, 5'7" box, 4x4" tells us everything the frame and body need. Add the trim and the paint code for body parts, and the VIN if you have it. The ordering page has the list.
